Recommendations start from what you marked, not from an editorial list
The suggestion shelf is not the same for everyone. It is built from what you are in the middle of right now, what you finished recently and your best ratings of all time, in that order of weight. What you are playing or watching TODAY counts for more than a five-star from two years ago, because the question the shelf answers is what you want to see now, not who you are in general.
On top of that there is a direct question: you pick the themes you like, per universe, and they steer the shelf without relying on deduction. Answer it and you get a shelf that reflects the answer; skip it and you keep one built from your collection alone.
What you already own drops off the list. It sounds obvious and it is the most common failure of the genre: recommending back the film someone rated five stars is the fastest way for a suggestion to lose credibility.
Why the list changes every day
A recommendation built the same way every time returns the same thing every time, and the shelf stops being worth a look by the third visit. Here the build rotates daily across two dimensions: the ANGLE of the query (what resembles what you liked, what people who saw this also saw, what is trending in your genre, what is acclaimed) and the DEPTH within that angle.
The two advance at rhythms that deliberately do not line up, so the combination takes weeks to repeat. Open the screen today and tomorrow and you will not see the same selection, and it will still be the same taste.
Your device also remembers what it has already shown you. What you have never seen moves to the front and repeats move back, from the ones out of sight the longest to yesterday's. Nothing is hidden: on a day when the catalog brings nothing new, the shelf is still full, it just starts somewhere else.
One honest limit: the recommendation shelf is part of the premium plan. Without it you see one real suggestion and the rest blurred, rather than an empty space pretending it does not exist.
Coming soon: a calendar, not a showcase
Next to the suggestions there is a tab for what has not come out yet. It reads as a calendar: from the nearest premiere to the furthest, left to right. It is the only list in the app not sorted by relevance, because its question is when, not whether it is worth it.
What GETS INTO that list is still personal: the genre of what you have been watching and the themes you declared decide which premieres show up. All the ordering does is say what comes first.
Any title there goes into your queue with one tap, carrying its date, and it is the queue that makes the app notify you on the day. There is no separate reminder button: being in the queue is the request.
When the answer comes from people, not from an algorithm
The best recommendation is still one from someone who knows you. The app treats that as a first-class feature: you can send a title straight to a person, with a rating and a note, and they decide whether it goes in their queue or gets dismissed. When they FINISH what you sent, you get a notification.
For deciding as a group there is another path: everyone suggests, everyone marks what they want, and the list sorts itself by votes. First place is what the group is closest to agreeing on, and you can set the date right there.
And there is the passive path: the feed of the people you follow, showing what each of them finished, with the rating and what they wrote. It is the part of the app that most resembles discovering something without looking for it.
